One business entity will be able to have many pharmacies under the same business name once the nation’s pharmacy law is revised.

An official of the Ministry of Health and Welfare said, “We are considering the proposal that the maximum number of pharmacies under the same business name should be decided by the number of pharmacists who have stakes in the business.”

In other words, if ten pharmacists have stakes in a certain pharmacy chain, ten drugstores can be opened.

The official added, “There will be a minimum investment amount required for a pharmacist to have a stake in a retail pharmacy chain.”

The new policy is likely to bring strong opposition from pharmacists as it goes out of the range of the latest discussion. It can be said that for-profit pharmacy chains will be allowed soon.

The government plans to submit its proposal to revise the pharmacy law by June 2014.
