Duplicate therapies of fourteen narcotic painkillers will be alerted by drug utilization review (DUR) through the health insurance system, starting on January 1, 2014, the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service (HIRA) said Monday.

The fourteen drugs include hydrocodone, hydromorphone, morphine, oxycodone, alfentanil, fentanyl, pethidine, remifentanil, sufentanil, buprenorphine, butorphanol, nalbuphine, pentazocine, and tramadol.

The HIRA expects that the overuse of narcotic painkillers and adverse reactions due to the overuse will be deceased with the addition of fourteen narcotic drugs for DUR.

The HIRA alerts therapeutic duplication for 174 drugs. It plans to add more drugs for DUR.
