More than ten pharmaceutical companies are working on their generic version of Celebrex and about twenty companies have already gotten marketing approval for their generic ones, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety said on Thursday.

The patent on the substance of celecoxib expires in June 2015, but the patent on the composition expires in November 2019. Chong Kun Dang currently filed its case to invalidate the patent on the composition of Celebrex.

As patents and marketing approvals are linked, starting March 2015, generic drug makers hope to finish up the commercialization before March 2015, avoiding delays due to patent issues.

It is expected over fifty generic versions will get to the market. Celebrex sales were about 57 billion won last year.
