Hospitals are no exception for Rx consultation

The Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW) said on July 10 said it would not make separate guidelines of pharmacy consultation for hospital pharmacists.

The MOHW considered hospital pharmacists’ request that their consultation guidelines should be different from those of community pharmacists. Hospital pharmacists pointed that they can’t cover all the inpatients due to the lack of human resources.

An official of the MOHW said, “Different, detailed guidelines for hospital pharmacists would rather confuse hospitals. Now they have just three months to comply with the new law on pharmacy consultation.”

Korea Hospital Pharmacists Association (KHPA) seems to partially agree with the MOHW and accepted its suggestion. An official of KHPA said, “The new law says pharmacists provide drug information to patients or their caregivers and the information can be chosen by pharmacists. We can say our discretionary decision is respected.”

The official of the KHPA added, “Mandatory consultation is for hospitals, too. We will make some detailed guidelines for small to medium-sized hospitals”
