Takeda Korea is working to list its new combination drug of Nesina and Actos on the national drug formulary, sources said on Thursday.

Takeda’s Nesina/Actos combo was approved by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety last month. Takeda plans to roll it out in the first quarter of 2015.

As the national health insurance covers three drugs for diabetes, doctors usually choose metformin and a DPP-4 inhibitor with one additional diabetes drug.

An official of Korean Diabetes Association said, “Physicians are interested in DPP-4 inhibitors and thiazolidinediones (TZDs). A TZD can be a good combination with a DPP-4 inhibitor and metformin. Especially those who are young with normal weights can be benefited by the three-drug combination.”
