Pharmaceutical patent law specialists are short in supply as the patent-approval linkage system will be effective next year.

Pharmaceutical patent law specialists should know both pharmacology and patent law, so there are only a few professionals who can handle the both.

Recently one of the pharmaceutical companies that frequently challenge patents hired a patent law specialist. An executive of the company said, “Sometimes more than five patent cases are pending at the same time. Big pharmaceutical companies with their own patent team usually have patent law specialists. One of top drugmakers even has three patent law specialists.”

But they are not satisfied with their patent law specialists as they often lack the knowledge on pharmacology.

A patent law firm who hired a patent law specialist who is pharmacist, said, “There are only a few professionals available when it comes to dealing with patents on drugs. Those few tend to go to the corporate that provides more benefits, so it is hard for us to get the qualified ones.”

It is known that more pharmacists are getting interested in acquiring the license to practice patent laws as the demand for pharmaceutical patent law specialists increased.
